We are thrilled to be able to highlight a keynote speaker each year and recognize community leaders for their efforts to address youth substance abuse. Each year we give the following awards:
- The Community Leadership AwardIdentifies individuals or non-profit organizations who demonstrate leadership within their community in dealing with many of the issues surrounding adolescent substance abuse. These individuals serve as advocates for youth and lead through their own example.
- The Community Vision AwardRecognizes an individual, organization, or business that has provided extensive support for community efforts to reduce youth substance abuse in Maine. Eligible nominees for this award include agencies, nonprofit organizations, media, businesses, and community groups.
- The Making a Difference AwardRecognizes an individual who displays leadership in strengthening the infrastructure essential to preventing and treating substance abuse among Maine youth.
Keynote speaker: Tom Caron
Lewiston native, Tom Caron shares his message of hope at the 2016 Day One 43rd Annual Celebration on November 15, 2016 at the Marriott Sable Oaks.
Community Leadership Award: Michael Bourque, Senior Vice President at MEMIC
Community Vision Award: Senator Michael Thibodeau and Representative Mark Eves, Maine State Legislature
Making a Difference Award: Gregg Frame, Founding member of Taylor, McCormack and Frame, LLC
Keynote speaker: Chris Herren
Chris Herren, a former Boston Celtic, is the subject of the ESPN documentary 30 for 30: Unguarded. He works to provide assistance to families affected by addiction and encourages others to stand up to drugs and alcohol.
Community Leadership Award: Dajuan Eubanks, President of the Maine Red Claws
Community Vision Award: Anne Haskell, Maine State Senator
Making a Difference Award: Ralph Hendrix, Chief Operating Officer at Macpage
Keynote speakers: Chris & Kathi Sullivan
Chris Sullivan, former defensive lineman for the 2001 Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots & Kathi Sullivan, his wife who speaks about the tragic loss of her teenage daughter.
Community Leadership Award: John Wolfgram, Cheverus Football Coach and Educator
Community Vision Award: Shelby Briggs, City of Portland Community Health Promotion Specialist
Making a Difference Award: Andrea Cayer, Natural Helpers Adult Facilitator at Cape Elizabeth
Keynote speaker: Butch Hobson
Former major league baseball player and manager Butch Hobson is the guest of honor at the 40th Annual Celebration.
Community Leadership Award: The Family of Bill Burke and the Portland Sea Dogs
Community Vision Award: Stephanie Anderson, Cumberland County District Attorney
Making a Difference Award: Linda Sanborn, Maine State Representative
Keynote speakers: Micky Ward & Dicky Eklund
“Irish” Micky Ward, three-time New England Golden Gloves champion boxer & Dicky Eklund, former New England Welterweight Champion.
Community Leadership Award: Bob Russo, President and Head Coach of the Portland Boxing Club
Community Vision Award: Gregory Rec, Photographer and John Richardson, State House Bureau Chief, Portland Press Herald
